The wet weather on Wednesday 7 June didn’t dampen the Invictus spirit as over 350 guests gathered in Sydney to welcome Prince Harry, Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, as he officially launched the 500-day countdown to the fourth Invictus Games – which will be held in Sydney in 2018! “The Invictus Games are coming to Australia – game on down under!” – Prince Harry Guests, including athletes and their families, ambassadors and our Deloitte volunteers joined in on the fun at various launch events across Sydney and participated in adaptive sports including volleyball, wheelchair basketball and rugby. Founded by Prince Harry, the Invictus Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and to promote a wider understanding and respect for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, and for the role that their families play. ‘Invictus’ is Latin for unconquered and it embodies the fighting spirit of the service personnel. Deloitte’s Patrick Kidd, Consulting Principal and CEO of Invictus Games Sydney 2018, and Ben Rahilly, COO of Invictus Games Sydney 2018, both played a key role in bringing the Invictus Games to Sydney. Patrick said, “What a great launch we had on Wednesday! The effort to get to this point has involved close to 40 Deloitte staff at various times over some 1,000 days. The Invictus Games gives Deloitte a great opportunity to use the force and profile of Invictus to really make an impact that matters across our community and in the areas of health and wellbeing. Deloitte is proud to be a Founding Partner of Invictus Games Sydney 2018 and proud of what we will achieve come the event in October next year.” Deloitte received recognition for our efforts at the official media launch from The Chairman of Invictus Games Sydney 2018, Lieutenant General Peter Leahy AC (Ret’d): “Deloitte has been right there from the start and they’ve been wonderful.” Key members of the Deloitte Invictus journey went to the various events throughout the day, such as the Partner Reception in the evening attended by Deloitte CEO Cindy Hook – who had a chance to meet Prince Harry. Cindy said, “I’m proud to lead a firm where our people are able to work together and make an impact that matters. Deloitte’s involvement and investment to bring the Invictus Games to Australia will aid in the wellness of participants from all over the world, allowing them to make a global impact.” More than 500 competitors from 18 nations will compete in 10 different adaptive sports in Sydney from 20-27 October 2018. The events will be staged across Greater Sydney, including on and around Sydney Harbour and at Sydney Olympic Park.
